Introduction
Dr. Ndidiamaka Okpareke, Pharm.D., a first-generation Nigerian-American, discovered her passion for pharmacy through a journey of self-discovery and purpose. After graduating with honors from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy in 2008, she gained valuable experience in both hospital and retail settings before launching her entrepreneurial journey in 2016. As the founder of Olive Tree Compounding Pharmacy, Dr. Okpareke is driven by a vision to provide personalized, innovative care. Her work reflects a deep commitment to community, wellness, and servant leadership—one client at a time.
Why Pharmacy
Pharmacy is a dynamic field of our healthcare system. It is a unique cross between all disciplines, which ultimately lead back to caring for the patient. My personal motivation and passion for pharmacy stems from the ability to practice in a creative and innovative way by tailoring medication therapy to every client's individual health needs.
Career Journey
Initially, I wanted to go to medical school. I decided to change career paths after working at Jos University Teaching Hospital in Jos, Nigeria during a summer as an undergraduate. That experience turned me away from medicine completely, and I enrolled in the College of Education upon my return to the United States. My plan was to teach second grade, which would have been amazing! However, an uncle of mine, who successfully owned many pharmacies, convinced me to apply to pharmacy school. I followed his lead, and matriculated into pharmacy school in 2004.
Current Role and Responsibilities
A typical day as a Compounding Pharmacist consists of provider-to-provider calls and consultations, patient-centered counseling and medication guidance, management of compounding operations and pharmacy workflow, designing marketing campaigns, revenue driven engagements, and enjoying time with my team!
Challenges
The most challenging aspect of my career is business management. The practice of pharmacy is second nature, but business management requires an elevated mindset at all times. Business evolves on a daily basis, and it is important to have the ability to pivot when the time comes.
Rewards
The most rewarding aspects of my career include creating a noble and trustworthy entity in my community, that is highly sought after for medication and health guidance by healthcare providers and patients. I have built a career that stands on credibility and amazing rapport.
Work/Life Balance
The balance between work and life is a fine one. I have learned to say 'no' when I need to rest and recuperate. I take long baths, and I treat myself to fine dining once in a while. I also do not hesitate to book an international flight to a place I've never been. Exploring the world has helped me to remain inspired, inquisitive, and excited about my next opportunities. Pharmacy is amazing, but it doesn't have to consume one's mind or entire being.
Advice for Students and Aspiring Professionals
The best advice I can give to a current student who seeks to become an entrepreneur in the field of compounding pharmacy is seek guidance first. It is important to study the niche profession under someone who has a positive attitude, and is striving towards success at all times.
