Balancing Pharmacy School, Leadership, and Motherhood
As a student pharmacist at Marshall B. Ketchum University College of Pharmacy (MBKU), Tasnem is passionate about making healthcare more accessible and helping patients better understand their medications. Inspired by her experiences growing up in a first-generation immigrant family and serving as her family's primary English speaker, she found her calling in pharmacy at the intersection of science, patient care, and advocacy. Today, Tasnem balances her roles as a pharmacy student, student organization president, intern pharmacist, and mom. She is also actively involved in multiple research projects exploring emerging areas of pharmacy practice, including pharmacokinetics, biotechnology, and innovative drug delivery systems. Through her dedication to research, leadership, mentorship, and community outreach, she hopes to advance the pharmacy profession while inspiring the next generation of pharmacists.
How did you choose your pharmacy school?
I chose MBKU because of its supportive environment, smaller class sizes, and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. Plus they offered me a high scholarship upon admission.
What do you wish you had known before applying to pharmacy school?
I wish I knew that you don't need to have everything figured out. Get involved early, explore different opportunities, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone!
Why did you choose pharmacy?
I chose pharmacy because growing up in a first-generation immigrant family, as the only English speaker in the household, I often helped my family understand their medications and navigate healthcare as well as doctors visits. Those experiences inspired me to pursue a career where I could combine my love for science with patient care and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Describe your career path and how you got into pharmacy.
I started my journey as a pharmacy technician, where I discovered my passion for medications and patient care. I went on to earn my bachelor's degree in Cell and Molecular Biology before pursuing my Doctor of Pharmacy degree at MBKU.
What does a typical workday/school day look like for you?
My days are usually a mix of attending lectures, studying, working on group assignments, and participating in multiple student organizations. As a pharmacy student, org president, and mom, every day is busy, but I love being able to balance my passions while working toward my goals!
Describe the most rewarding aspects of your career.
The most rewarding part is knowing that I can make a difference in someone's life. I love helping patients understand their medications, feel more confident about their health, and know they have someone they can trust.
Describe the most challenging aspect of your career.
The biggest challenge is balancing pharmacy school, leadership responsibilities, and being a mom. It can be overwhelming at times, but it has taught me time management, resilience, and the importance of staying focused on my goals.
What advice would you give to a current student who is interested in pursuing a similar type of career in the future?
Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone! Get involved, find mentors, and take advantage of every opportunity. Everyone's journey is different, so don't compare your path to someone else's. Believe in yourself and keep going!
Share a brief story about a time you had a positive impact in your role.
As president of Future Pharmacists of America, I've had the opportunity to visit schools and speak with students about careers in pharmacy. Being able to share my journey and encourage younger students to pursue their goals has been one of my favorite experiences. It's rewarding knowing that my story could inspire someone to follow a similar path.
Describe how you manage school/life balance.
Balancing pharmacy school, leadership roles, and being a mom isn't always easy! I try to stay organized, manage my time, and prioritize what's most important. I've learned that it's okay to take breaks, ask for help, and make time for myself and my family.
