Why Pharmacy

I basically tried to be open to new experiences and say yes, even if I had to learn new things to be successful. My career path involved attending pharmacy school, completing a pharmacy resident at a VA hospital, working with a hospital for about 10 years before changing to academia.

Career Journey

I work in a hospital focusing on the medications that patients admitted to the hospital for a cardiac condition receive. In my role, I train students and pharmacy residents on how to evaluate medication therapy for various disease states with an emphasis on drug information. In my role at the hospital, I also review drug monographs, policies, and procedures related to medications used for treating cardiac conditions.

Current Role and Responsibilities

It varies since I work for the hospital and the College of Pharmacy. I prioritize what needs to be done and sometimes I finish all my work during regular hours and other times, I'm trying to finish up on evenings and weekends. Since I've been in my current role for about 15 years, I have learned to balance my workload to allow for a positive home life as well. In general, I work Monday - Friday and have weekends and holidays off.

Challenges

Balancing workload with personal life.

Rewards

I love watching pharmacy students and pharmacy residents have the 'lightbulb' or 'ah-ha' moment and knowing I had a small part in that!

Advice for Students and Aspiring Professionals

I would encourage anyone who can stay self-motivated and has a passion for teaching to pursue a career in academia. If you love to learn, you'll love everyday at work!
