Falling in Love with Findlay
My adventure started the summer before my senior year of high school at Findlay’s Summer Pharmacy Camp. It was my first visit to a pharmacy school, and I immediately fell in love with the campus. The week at camp was filled with fun and learning. This camp gave me a real taste of what being a pharmacist entails as I compounded medications and completed various patient care simulations. Plus, the social activities and bonding moments with fellow campers were unforgettable. I got to meet amazing faculty and students who made me feel like part of the “pharmily” (pharmacy + family = pharmily!). It was clear that Findlay was more than just a school; it was a place where I could thrive both personally and professionally.
Why Findlay?
One of the coolest things about Findlay is the 0+6 program. This means I don’t have to compete for a spot in the pharmacy program after I start. From day one, I’m part of a cohesive group of future pharmacists. My classmates and I are like one big team, supporting each other to become the best pharmacists we can be. This seamless transition from the foundational years to pharmacy school is a huge relief, as it allows us to focus on our studies and professional development without the added stress of reapplying to the program.
I’ve always been interested in healthcare. Growing up, I spent a lot of time in hospitals with my brother, who has a chronic illness. Watching the care and dedication of the healthcare professionals who helped him inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a similar impact. I’ve always been good at science and math, so pharmacy seemed like a perfect fit. Visiting UF and being able to interact with the supportive faculty confirmed that pharmacy was the path for me. The university’s commitment to experiential learning and community outreach resonated with my desire to make a difference in people’s lives.
Awesome Mentors
At Findlay, we have both faculty mentors and mentors in the pharmacy field. These relationships have been instrumental in shaping my career path. My mentor, Carmen, has been super helpful in narrowing down my future interests. Whether I’m considering geriatric pharmacy, industry, or another specialty, Carmen provides guidance and insight based on her extensive experience. One of my faculty mentors, Dr. Schneider, always reminds me to keep my options open and challenges me to become a well-rounded pharmacist. Dr. Schneider’s encouragement to explore different areas of pharmacy and to engage in interdisciplinary learning has broadened my perspective and prepared me for the diverse opportunities in the field.
These mentors not only offer academic and career advice but also provide personal support. They understand the pressures of pharmacy school and are always available to lend a listening ear or offer a word of encouragement. Their belief in my potential motivates me to push myself and strive for excellence.
The Best Part: People
My favorite part of pharmacy school is definitely the people. My peers and professors are amazing. We all support each other because we know that every one of us becoming a great pharmacist is crucial for our future patients. The camaraderie and mutual respect among students create a collaborative learning environment where we can share knowledge and resources.
The faculty and staff at UF genuinely care about our success, both in the classroom and in our personal lives. They take the time to get to know us individually, understanding our strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations. I’ve made connections with my professors that will help me throughout my career. Their mentorship extends beyond graduation, offering a network of professionals I can rely on as I navigate my career. The relationships I’ve built here have not only enriched my educational experience but also provided a strong support system that will last a lifetime.
Challenges and Growth
Pharmacy school isn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles for me has been time management. Juggling academics, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments can be overwhelming at times. I’m involved in a lot of activities, like pharmacy organizations, running the college’s social media, leading tours, and working on research projects. Balancing all of this with my academics is tough, but it’s making me more versatile and prepared for my future career.
It’s important to recognize that each challenge you face is an opportunity for growth. For instance, managing multiple responsibilities has taught me to prioritize tasks and develop effective study habits. Participating in research projects has honed my analytical and critical thinking skills, while my involvement in pharmacy organizations has enhanced my leadership and teamwork abilities. These experiences are shaping me into a well-rounded professional ready to tackle the diverse demands of a career in pharmacy.
