When my campus dean, Dr. James Wheeler, approached me about helping with a Make-A-Wish visit for 8-year-old Ava suffering with acute myeloblastic leukemia, I immediately recognized the opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful way. As a current member of the Psi chapter of the Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity, I’ve been involved in our ongoing partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which focuses on service and charitable outreach, making this event a natural extension of our mission. I’ve always believed that pharmacy is more than a profession, but it’s also a platform for connection, education, and compassion. The chance to be part of a wish experience at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy was both humbling and exciting.

Interacting with Ava during her visit impacted me in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Having the opportunity to compound “Wizard Whipped Cream” and drop Mentos into Diet Coke with Ava allowed me to combine my pharmacy knowledge and fun activities for all ages. I was familiar with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and its mission, but I hadn’t seen firsthand how these wishes were brought to life. The level of care, coordination, and joy that went into her day was remarkable. It wasn’t just about showing her the world of pharmacy; it was about creating a moment of celebration for her and her family. I saw how much these experiences mean, not just to Ava and her family, but to everyone involved.

Planning Ava’s visit felt like producing a small-scale event, and it taught me how important preparation is to make something truly special. From coordinating with faculty and staff to working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of East Tennessee and local media, I was reminded that pharmacists don’t work in isolation, but we’re part of a broader network that supports and uplifts patients in diverse ways. Professionally, it was a chance to collaborate with individuals outside the healthcare system, and personally, it was a moment of deep gratitude.

One of the most powerful takeaways from Ava’s wish day was seeing how pharmacists can be viewed as superheroes. Her admiration for the profession was inspiring and something that I can think back to when I am having a rough day for years in the future. It reminded me that our role goes far beyond dispensing medications; we educate, advocate, and sometimes, we help make dreams come true. Ava’s excitement to learn about compounding, patient care, and the science behind pharmacy showed me that our work can spark curiosity and hope.

This unique experience reaffirmed my commitment to pharmacy and the impact we can have when we lead with empathy and purpose. My day with Ava reminded me that the heart of pharmacy lies not just in clinical expertise, but in human connection. Being part of Ava’s journey was a privilege I won’t forget, and a beautiful example of how pharmacists can make a lasting difference in patients’ lives.
