Diyana Ahmad, a student pharmacist at the University of Arizona, shares her journey into pharmacy, inspired by healthcare gaps in her home country and a passion for helping others. Despite challenges balancing the workload, Diyana has found a supportive community, mentorship, and opportunities to grow both academically and professionally.

How did you choose your pharmacy school/college or graduate program?

I chose my pharmacy school because it had a good reputation for both learning and real-world experience. I liked that the program focused on taking care of patients and working with other healthcare professionals, which is important to me. The school also had opportunities to explore new research, and the teachers were supportive. I was excited to join student groups and community programs where I could improve my skills and help others. Overall, the school felt like the right place to help me reach my goals in both learning and my future career as a pharmacist.

Why did you decide to pursue your career?

I chose to pursue a career in pharmacy due to my experiences as an immigrant from a third-world country, where I witnessed significant gaps in healthcare. Before starting pharmacy school, I worked with various organizations outside the U.S., helping those in need, which sparked my desire to be involved in healthcare. In the U.S., I discovered that pharmacy offers a well-rounded path, allowing me to understand patients, collaborate with doctors, and gain deep knowledge of medications. Pharmacy felt like the ideal way for me to contribute meaningfully and help improve the lives of others.

Who has helped you as you explored possible career paths?

I received support from my family, but my classmates and mentors at college have been especially helpful in exploring possible career paths. The guidance and encouragement from faculty members played a key role in helping me understand my options and make informed decisions about my future in pharmacy.

What is your favorite part of pharmacy school/college or graduate education?

My favorite part of pharmacy school is the numerous opportunities it provides to learn about various organizations and community initiatives. I appreciate being able to engage with these programs beyond the classroom. Additionally, my cohort feels like family; we support one another, and the faculty and student services are always there to help.

What do you find most challenging about pharmacy or graduate school?

The most challenging aspect of pharmacy school for me has been the workload and the volume of material covered each week. After almost a decade away from school, balancing study time with my personal life was difficult. However, as a third-year student, I’m gradually finding a better balance and feeling more in control.

What advice would you give to students interested in attending pharmacy or graduate school?

If you’re passionate about helping others and improving healthcare, pharmacy school is a great choice. Start preparing early and actively participate in events and organizations within the program. This involvement will open doors and strengthen your network, as the pharmacy community is tight-knit, and connections can be invaluable.

What do you wish you had known before applying to pharmacy or graduate school?

I wish I had known more about the importance of networking and building relationships within the pharmacy community before applying. Engaging with mentors and peers early on can greatly enhance your experience.
