Diversity and Representation in Pharmacy

Pharmacy is an ever-evolving field that offers great career opportunities for people of all backgrounds. However, for people of color, there are some unique benefits to consider. Diversity in pharmacy is important for increasing representation in the field. 

Diversity is essential in any industry, and the pharmacy field is no exception. As a pharmacist, you’re a vital member of the healthcare team and your role in patient care is critical. She is also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association. Dr. Chisholm-Burns researches medication adherence and health outcomes. Additionally, the field recognizes her as a leader in advancing the pharmacy profession. Not only is she making significant contributions to the field of pharmacy and representing women of color, but her work has helped to pave the way for future generations to make a difference in the field.

The pharmacy industry is recognizing the importance of diversity and taking steps to increase representation. Many pharmacy schools and organizations are implementing diversity initiatives to recruit and retain students and professionals from underrepresented groups.

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) has developed a Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit, which includes resources to help pharmacy schools create inclusive learning environments and recruit diverse students. Additionally, the Pharmacy Workforce Center is another organization that works to increase diversity in the pharmacy workforce. They support and provide resources to underrepresented individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy.

Professional organizations are helping pharmacies hire more diverse staff. However, these organizations also assist students directly that prioritize diversity and representation in the field. These programs ensure that pharmacists of color can feel supported and valued in their workplaces.

For example, AACP has the Aspiring Academics (AAA) Program which is designed to inform and inspire students from diverse backgrounds who are interested in pursuing an academic pharmacy career. This diversity and inclusion strategy ensures that pharmacy schools are able to recruit and develop diverse talent, creating a culture of inclusion, and engaging with diverse communities. 

Therefore, pharmacy is an excellent career choice for people of color. There are many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of patients and communities. The focus on diversity in the field offers unique opportunities for pharmacists of color to make a meaningful impact.
