Why I Choose Pharmacy: Fueled by a Desire to Help People

Category

Megan Gushrowski is a P3 student at Manchester University. Megan’s interactions with her pharmacist helped push her toward the pharmacy field, fueled by her desire to help people. The following is a look into Megan’s journey to pharmacy school.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in pharmacy?

When deciding on my future career, I knew that I was interested in the healthcare field and wanted to help people. I ultimately decided to pursue a career in pharmacy because I wanted to learn about medications and share that knowledge with my patients so that they know how to use their medications correctly.

What about your path to pharmacy school is unique?

I completed two years of undergraduate pre-requisites for pharmacy school and then entered the professional program.

How did you choose your school of pharmacy?

I considered many factors when deciding on a pharmacy school; however, I ultimately decided on Manchester University College of Pharmacy due to the smaller class sizes that allow you to connect with the professors and other students in your class. Plus, the pharmacy building is absolutely beautiful, and I love the Fort Wayne area.

Did you have any mentors that helped you as you explored possible career paths?

One of my pharmacists at work has supported me throughout pharmacy school and helped to guide me. She graduated from my program a few years prior, and we have had conversations about rotations and my post-graduate plans. Additionally, I have worked with and have learned a lot from several great pharmacists. Their unique perspectives on completing school and starting their careers have been eye-opening to me as I consider what my future holds.

What is your favorite part of pharmacy school?

My favorite part of pharmacy school would have to be the sense of community on campus. There are so many different activities to get involved with. It is great to finally be back to in-person learning to connect with professors and colleagues, especially from the other classes.

What do you find most challenging about pharmacy school?

The most challenging part about pharmacy school is maintaining balance in my life. Being involved in student organizations and working while also keeping up with my classes has required me to manage my time wisely. There are so many fun activities and opportunities to participate in during pharmacy school, but it requires hard work to ensure that I don’t get behind in my classes.

What advice would you give to students interested in attending pharmacy school?

Take challenging classes in high school, especially anatomy & physiology, as it will help prepare you for the rigorous material covered in pharmacy school. There are so many opportunities for pharmacists outside of the community pharmacist that comes to everyone’s mind, so take time to explore these options and learn what areas may interest you.
